The run a Repair Permissions on your hard drive. This usually fixes most Mac problems like what you're describing. You can also look in Applications-> Microsoft Office 2008 for the Microsoft Update Tool and try to update Office, if it is not the latest version. If neither of these things work, I'd recommend backing up and re-imaging the machine, or maybe Googling "manual uninstall microsoft office 2008 mac." Good luck!
