Trip to Greece: Delphi

[simage=7,288,y,right]It’s been over three months since I got back from my trip to Greece, but it’s been a really busy 3 months, so I’m just getting around to posting about it now. Barbara and I arrived with my parents into Athens on May 30th, then set about driving up towards the island of Corfu. Our first stop along the way was the Temple of the Oracle of Apollo at Delphi. Recent research suggests that the oracle’s many famous prophecies may have been influenced by the presence of natural, hallucinogenic gas found at the site. As is pretty common with Greek historic sites, much of the area is roped off, but you can still get an idea of just how far up the mountain the temple was built.

One thing I didn’t know about was the stadium built well above the rest of the temple buildings–an impressive feat considering that it is by far the largest structure in the temple area. You can also see the caves nestled much higher against the sheer cliff faces–in which the last vestiges of the Greek forces stationed here hid from the invading Roman Army.
